Irene booked a first class train ride from Cumberland, Maryland, to Frostburg, MD, a few weeks back and we have been looking forward to the trip.  It's a long drive from Halethorpe to Cumberland; 138 miles and about 2 and half hours.  The train ride included a three course lunch with desert served on the return trip.  The elevation difference between the two cities is about 1400 feet; Frostburg is 2000 feet MSL and Cumberland is about 600.

The train left Cumberland about 11:15 a.m. and arrived in Frostburg at 12:45 p.m..  We had about 45 minutes to tour the town and my goal was to get to the McFarland's Candy Store and back before the train departed at 2 p.m.  We actually had more time because the train didn't leave Frostburg till 2:15.

If you are in this part of the country I highly recommend you book a trip.  Lots of fun and beautiful country!  For anyone who is real adventuresome, you can ride the train from Cumberland to Frostburg, with your bicycle, then ride your bicycle back to Cumberland.  A few did it and, off course, it is mostly down hill.
